Tips To Make Traditional Mexican Dishes Diet-Friendly

Thinking about Mexican cuisine, we get glimpses of fried nachos and cheesy burritos. All the deep-fried and cheese-loaded food items certainly do not fall under the category of healthy food. But if you try to stick to healthy options, traditional Mexican delicacies can be great for you. You only have to swap ingredients and cooking strategies a bit to transform your delicious Mexican food.

Instead Of Frying Grill, Bake, Roast, Or Steam

Grilled fish, lean meat, and poultry are the best sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals. This way you can use a minimum amount of oil or fat in the cooking, making it diet-friendly. You may serve the roasted meat with a side of sautéed  ejotes beans to complete the low-carb meal.

Ask For Corn Tortillas

Taco made with corn tortillas, instead of white-flour ones are a better option. You can top it with a dollop of guacamole instead of sour cream to make it a smart entrée pick.

Stay Away From Red Meat And Cheese

Say adios to those extra calories by sticking to black beans instead of beef or cheese in your Mexican favorites such as burritos and enchiladas. Black beans are rich in protein and calcium making them such a healthy alternative to red meat. Substituting ground turkey for beef or pork can also reduce the fat content in many dishes.

Try Healthier Dessert Options

If you are dessert, stay away from churros, which are fried, or tres leches cake, made with condensed milk, and a load of butter. Instead, try Mexican chocolate with fresh fruits, but remember portion control is the key.

The Bottom Line

Mexican cuisine is full of complex flavors of tons of spices and chilies. If you can cook meat substitutes (jackfruit, cauliflower) in the spicy sauce you can lower the calorific value of the dish without compromising the taste.
